CM’s 2011 Guide to Dorm Decor

It’s not quite your first apartment or home, but a dorm room, tiny as it may be, allows for optimum personalization.  Working with a small space requires functionality: items that are easy to store and will be used regularly. Before you spend your summer wages on unnecessary pieces of furniture and appliances, consider these five must have dorm room accessories:

1.)  Wall Decals

Is there anything worse than spending the night in a jail cell?  Eliminate the stark white dorm walls with easy, removable decals that come in an endless variety of designs. Indiana University freshman Rachael Fronek coordinated with her roommate freshman Holly James to create a bright and organized space fit for two girls.  Wall decals add a pop of color and plenty of storage containers keep their space organized.

2.)  3M Command Wall Hooks and Magic Hangers

Don’t underestimate these powerful hooks that attach to just about any surface without the hassle of a hammer and nails.  Try to hang as many things as possible to stay organized and keep the clutter out of your closet. Magic Hangers also expand your closet space (five hangers in one). So girls, feel free to bring more fall clothes!

3.) Keurig single-cup coffee brewers

A Keurig 35 B30 Mini Personal Single-Serve Brewing System is definitely a splurge (or a graduation gift) for the savvy coffee-lover that won’t leave you in permanent debt to Starbucks.  Brew your single cup while you get ready for your morning classes with refillable K-Cups.

4.) A statement lamp

A nice transition from harsh ceiling fluorescent lights, the Ikea Orgel Floor Lamp sets the mood for some ambiance lighting during a movie or nap session.

5.) Body pillows

Transform your bed into a couch or lounge on the floor with friends on a large body pillow.  The best part?  Match any bedspread with changeable colored pillowcases.

Have an awesome dorm room?  Send in your photos to College Magazine and show us how you decorated with your favorite pieces!
