Let’s Talk About Memes, Baby

Honest question: Where did memes come from? Who decided that we should all of the sudden start worshipping “bread?” Who decided to compare all of our relationships to those of lamps and moths? When did I start to find happiness in scrolling through Instagram? Or Facebook?

So many questions. What I’m trying to figure out is, how they become such an integral part of my life? Why do I hope to only see memes when I scroll through Instagram? Why are all my notifications of memes being sent to me or people responding to the memes I send them? And why do I automatically scroll through meme pages when I’m sad?

Memes have become their own source of communication: you can now connect with faraway friends, bond over a random experience with an acquaintance, flirt with a crush or solidify a friendship. Memes make this all possible. They’re multi-purposeful and just about the easiest source of entertainment.

Personally, I think their magical happiness inducing qualities come from their simplicity- simple pictures and small amounts of text. No matter your mood or preferences, there is a meme page or account for everyone.

Whether you’re sad or happy, getting over a crush or starting a new relationship, stressed about school or chilling over a break: memes are guaranteed to always be there for you.

As a devout meme lover, you can trust me when I say that the meme world is far too vast for me to discuss all of it at once. With that in mind, I’m going to share a couple of my favorite memes with all of you today.

Keep in mind, that these memes are personalized to me. But don’t let this discourage you. It just means that memes are easily personalized. First things first, there are millions of meme accounts. As a math major and animal lover I follow a ton of math meme accounts and a bunch of cute animal meme accounts.

I am totally biased, but tell me this isn’t at least slightly funny.

You totally did the Batman (BATMN) there. I know it! If you’re like me, and have weird meme tastes, I’d recommend trying other social media applications besides Instagram to find meme accounts. Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and so on all have great meme accounts that will give you a larger variety than just Instagram meme pages. This especially goes if you’re looking for specific memes.

Cute animal memes are also great. Here’s one of my personal favorites:

@memezar

This meme is just plain hilarious. Another thing about memes: don’t over-analyze them. They are meant for one singular purpose only: to make you laugh and make you happy. Do not go looking up if this is real or not because that would ruin the joke. Take the joke, laugh, put a smile on your face and go forth.

The most common type of meme that I have seen amongst most of my friends is the “funny and relatable” meme. Here are a couple examples:

Let’s never forget that post-skipping depression:

We love a good science joke, too:

These memes are honestly my favorites. They’re just always about random things but feel so relatable.

You look at them and you’re thinking, “Yes! I do have a cold side of the pillow! And you’re right random meme, I love that side of the pillow!” And now, you’ve got a smile on your face and you’re happy. It’s all in the memes.

Then there are those really relatable memes that leave you feeling completely understood. You can usually tell which ones these are because you’ll make a half-smile and sigh a whole lot after reading them. Here’s a great one I recently found:

memes
@pakalupapito

Yep. Half-smile of appreciation for how true it is. And then there’s that sigh.

“Aah yes, you get me random meme.”

In the end, there truly are memes for every type of person. If you didn’t like any of mine, literally type the name of something you like followed by the word “meme” into any search engine or social media network. I promise immediate satisfaction.

The one issue arises from private accounts. As you and your friends probably know (if you often send memes), private accounts suck. But there’s an easy solution. I’ll let my good friend Me’me explain it to you:

Hope you got in one final Batman with that. I hope you find some awesome memes today. With that in mind,

Happy scrolling!
