We Heard It Before You Did: 15 Alternative Hipster Summer Jams

If you believe your local radio station’s Top 40 tracks are crap, we are right there with you. How many times do they expect us to listen to “Work” before we actually send in our two-weeks notice? Well, maybe we aren’t quitting our jobs just yet, but we’re definitely searching through all the stations to find something fresh, new and not played in every club. Listen to this playlist customized just for you and unleash your inner hipster this summer.

1. “I’m Good” by The Mowgli’s

No. This isn’t off the soundtrack of the new The Jungle Book movie. This song screams, “I’m a free spirit, and I don’t need you imposing your unoriginal ideas on me!”

2. “Kids” by MGMT

Although you’re young adults, it never hurts to channel your inner kid spirit. This song brings back the good times when you and your best friend were both just a couple of kids.

3. “Best Friend” by Foster The People

With who else would you roast all the basics who listen to Justin Bieber and Fifth Harmony?

4. “Young Blood” by The Naked and Famous

Why grow up now? We only have a few summer breaks  in our lives. Stay young, folks, and refrain from conformity!

5. “On Our Way” by The Royal Concept

Though you’re young, these summers are the ones that mold you into who you are. Even though you really want to graduate, this time is all about the journey and not the destination .

6. “We Come Running” by Youngblood Hawke

If you’re becoming the healthy hipster type, you might need to add a few tracks (pun intended) to your workout playlist. Make this song one of them, and let everyone hear how hipster you are.

7. “Lifted Up (1985)” by Passion Pit

All hipsters were born in the wrong decade. That’s why you wear mom jeans and grunge makeup. Of course you would know 1985 was a good year.

8. “Let’s Go”  by Matt and Kim

You love being a homebody with your best friend and binge watching Netflix. But when you have to convince your friend to leave the couch, play this to get her going.

9.  “Fiona Coyna” by Skylar Spence

Okay, so your friend refuses to get off the couch. Yet you manage to convince her to have a 30-second dance party with you. But what song to play? This techno jam, duh.

10. “Work This Body” by WALK THE MOON

Your friend has now stood up and danced. Next, you persuade her to get dressed and work what her momma gave her!

11. “Light Me Up” by Bronze Radio Return

You might even roll one and ask your bestie to pass the lighter. You aren’t hipsters for nothing.

12. “My Type” by Saint Motel

Once everyone has had a beer (or two or three or seven), your friend’s “type” might go from the typical bass player in an undercover band to full on lumberjack hipster with a beard and flannel.

13. “Ways To Go”  by Grouplove

Now that you’ve gotten your friend out the house and dancing, you can’t help but notice how mainstreamers robotically dance along to Drake’s “One Dance.” You refuse to join the crowd and decide turn up a little differently.

14. “Dreaming” by Smallpools

Being independent thinkers means we have even bigger dreams. And this summer is just the start of living them out. The world is ours now!

15. “What You Know” by Two Door Cinema Club

And at the end of the night,  look at all those posers and followers and say, “And what do you know?” Because they obviously know nothing.
