Fashion Blog: Cropped Tops? Why Not.

It seems like it was only a few years ago that belly baring tops were seen as the ultimate taboo. If your stomach was showing you were automatically relegated into the fashion don’t category. The late ‘90’s trend, championed by pop sensations such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, fell by the wayside, and in came a more conservative style of shirts that adequately covered ones midsection. However, cropped tops are back my friends. This tricky little fashion trend is back in style and haunting every girl who does not have the washboard abs of Hollywood starlets. But fear not! Everyone, yes, everyone, can successfully pull of this trend no matter what size you are.

My favorite way to wear a cropped top, in a universally flattering way, is to pair the shirt with a high waisted skirt. This way you are wearing the cropped top, but you aren’t actually showing any part of your stomach. The skirt should be on the shorter side, and the shirt should just hit the waistband. If you are feeling more daring or more comfortable with your figure, wear the top with a pair of skinny jeans or shorts.

The great thing about these types of tops is that they can be casual à la beach cover up, or they can be dressed up with a blazer for work and heels. American Apparel has a variety of tops, some in jersey and others in a silk blend, so whether you want to wear it dressed up or dressed down, you have the option. Don’t feel like you have to shy away from this trend, there are plenty of ways to wear it without looking like you stepped out of Clueless. So the next time you want something simple that will update your wardrobe, try a cropped tee, you can’t go wrong.
