Would you write in 140 characters or less to gain a $37,000 scholarship?
Well, the University of Iowa is looking to find out. The university announced that they would award a scholarship for their MBA program to the applicant with the most creative tweet in response to the question, "What makes you an exceptional Tippie MBA candidate and full-time MBA hire? Creativity encouraged!"
Instead of a writing an essay, applicants can either use Facebook or Twitter to show why they want to attend the school, and as Jodi Schafer, the Tippie School of Management's director of recruiting and admissions told the Iowa Press-Citizen, "This would give us a lot more depth and show us more about a candidate than an essay would show."
Colleen Downie, senior assistant dean of the full-time MBA program in the Tippie School of Management, said to Newscore, that the process is a way for the school to see that prospective students “embrace innovation and are comfortable using the kind of media and technology driving so many changes in business." The tweet can include links to resumes, blogs, etc. and must be sent by July 28. The recipient will be announced August 4.
While the University of Iowa is not the first to offer a Twitter-based scholarship, this is just another sign that social media is truly taking over…well, everything.
