The New Menswear (for Women)

Facebook Tweet
Emily Farra   August 21, 2011

While there are plenty of daring trends to try this fall (like pastel furs, oversize polka dots and insanely mixed prints), nothing feels more on-trend than cozy, classic menswear-inspired pieces. Think old-school Ralph Lauren; equestrian-esque pieces like cable-knit sweaters, grandpa plaids and penny loafers – but with a modern, feminine spin, of course.

The pieces below perfectly illustrate this trend. Instead of taking direct inspiration from stuffy men’s pieces, choose items that just hint at the trend. Stick to a neutral palette of camel, cream, and olive, but add pops of rich color with an orange scarf and yellow pants to keep it fresh.  Similarly, a tiny retro plaid looks perfect – even a little sexy – on a fitted blazer worn open, with a solid tank underneath.

Wearing chic, modern shapes also keeps this trend current. Buy a chunky cable knit a few sizes too big and wear it slouchy with skinny pants and riding boots (or the penny loafer heels, which add a sophisticated touch to any outfit). Or invest in a loose, asymmetrical jacket done in a giant red-and-charcoal check pattern.  Finishing touches like a sporty puffer vest, a vintagey envelope purse and a dainty chain-link bracelet complete the look.

  1. Plaid blazer, H&M, $29.95
  2. Yellow pants, H&M, $14.95
  3. Loafer heels, H&M, $49.95
  4. Silk-cashmere wrap scarf, J.Crew, $75
  5. Envelope bag, H&M, $24.95
  6. Knitted Cable-Knit Sweater, Topshop, $76
  7. Chain-link bracelet, H&M, $4.95
  8. Felt flared-back jacket, Thakoon, $590
