The Long Distance Rulebook

Another year of college comes to a close. You pack up, move out and head home for the summer months. Just because you’re leaving your campus doesn’t mean you have to leave behind your college relationship as well. You put in a lot of man-hours to hook and keep your perfect someone. You want to make sure the love doesn’t die just because you’re not at school.

Long distance is a hard thing to weather in a relationship. It takes a lot of work, a lot of trust, and some creativity to keep the romance alive. But how do you decide if the distance is a sign to stay together or call it quits? The following are some ideas and tips to make sure your time apart doesn’t shred you or your realtionship up.

Remember: Don’t let long distance bully you into making an irrational decision. Take time to think about it. Weigh the pros and cons. Long distance is definitely doable, but it  depends on the effort you and your significant other are willing to put in. Ask youself these questions: How far are you from each other? How often will you be able to visit each other? How will you communicate? How often? Do you trust the other person to be faithful? Do you trust yourself?

If you have considered each of the factors and decide the relationship is worth it, congratulations! Summer is only a few months. Your relationship is worth the challenge.

Now for some tips on how to keep the relationship strong and steamy:

Always be honest and upfront. Tell the other person what you’re doing and where you’re going. Keep them informed about your life. Because you aren’t together, it’s harder to be sure about the other’s actions, which often leads to suspicion and fighting.

“Trust will always be an issue," says Erik Rocchino, a freshman at Pennsylvania State University. "Insecurity in a relationship is inevitable. A lot of issues that arise from being far away is just miscommunication so a healthy amount of communication is the best way to avoid fights over little stuff."

Make time for each other. This seems simple, but can be hard to do. Set aside a time each night, clear all distractions, and talk about your day together. Talking about the little stuff that may seem insignificant, but is an important move in the long run. Tell you significant other that you had your favorite food for dinner. Let them be a part of your day. This will make it seem like your someone is right there with you.

Turn up the heat. Sex is an essential part of any healthy relationship. Just because you’re not seeing each other every day, doesn’t mean the passion has to die. Flirt, send dirty text messages and have x-rated phone conversations. When you do see each other, make it special: wear lingerie, fool around in exciting places, and don’t hold back sexually. It will make the time you have with each other more memorable.

“Keep the attraction alive by speaking your minds, flirting it up a little on the phone, and then when it comes to seeing each other, just live out what you guys talked about,” says Andrew Ojeda, a senior at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
