Column: More On The Sandusky Saga

Facebook Tweet
Josh Axelrod   December 10, 2011
“On a scale of Casey Anthony to Jerry Sandusky, how much do you love your children?”

Leave it to Reddit to mine comedy out of both the Casey Anthony murder trial and the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. As politically incorrect as this is (I may or may not have chuckled), sometimes the best way to look at situations as horrific as these is through a lens of humor. If you focusing on the grotesque reality of it all, you may end up like this:

In all seriousness though: the case against Jerry Sandusky keeps growing, every new development more disturbing than the last.  On Wednesday, Sandusky was arrested on fresh sexual abuse charges after two new accusers alleged the former Penn State defensive coordinator molested them. The new alleged victims told the grand jury they met Sandusky through his Second Mile charity, which was founded in 1977 to help at-risk youths.

"I took it at first he was just a nice guy, like he went to church every weekend, his kids would come over every once in a while and stuff,” the ninth accuser, now 18, recounted to the grand jury. “And after a while, like, he got used to me and stuff and started getting further and further, wanting – to touchy feely."

The tenth accuser said a counselor referred him to The Second Mile in 1997 when he was 10 and having problems at home. His story is particularly specific and outrageous: he was not only molested at Sandusky’s home during “wrestling sessions,” but also at a pool on the Penn State campus after, as reported by The Huffington Post, “Sandusky allegedly exposed himself in a car while driving and requested that the boy perform a sex act on him.”

The grand jury report is just as harrowing: "The victim testified that on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him.”

Sandusky now has over 50 charges against him. Until he is sentenced to a (hopefully) permanent prison sentence, Sandusky remains a free man after posting a $250,000 bail. He is being forced to wear an electronic monitoring device under the terms of his release.

Hopefully this is the last time I will ever have to write the name “Jerry Sandusky” in a CM article. What more can be said about him at this point? He’s an accused child molester who used a charity for troubled youths to attract young boys and lull them into a false sense of security. At this point, all we can do is laugh at the absurdity of this nightmare:
