Mad for Monochrome

Facebook Tweet
Emily Farra   August 8, 2011

One of the greatest things about summer is the ability to wear bright, bold colors that were totally taboo all winter: ripe orange, sunny yellow, mossy green and punchy pink are staples in anyone’s summer closet. But instead of taking the generic route and wearing lots of bright colors together, why not try a more monochromatic scheme ? Choosing one color with subtle changes in hue and saturation can make for a super chic ensemble.

Take the three monochromatic looks below, all from the J.Crew Fall 2011 collection. While these looks let just one color take center stage, none of the outfits look boring – and they allow you to wear your favorite brights through fall:

By employing a few simple styling tricks – like adding contrasting shoes, a hint of pattern, and making your coat the focal point – this simple trend becomes insanely stylish.  Additionally, the slouchy yellow sweater lends some ease to a crisp pencil skirt, and the reddish pants temper the cayenne coat to keep it from looking overly bold. I love how look #2 plays with texture; between the velvety shorts, knit sweater, and calf-hair flats, this neutral outfit is anything but plain.

How will you play with this trend? To get started, pick out your favorite color and pull out everything from your closet in that shade. Then start experimenting! You’ll find it’s even easier than you think.
