Facebook Tries to Fill the ‘Space’

Facebook Tweet
Matt Petronzio   June 21, 2011

We all know that Mark Zuckerberg is successful. Sure, The Social Network makes everyone question his motives, but if there’s one thing most college students couldn’t live without, it’s Facebook.

But what is it about Facebook that makes it last, while MySpace (uh, now stylized as My_____, when did that happen?) went out with the trash a long time ago? Most people will tell you that the only reason MySpace still has users is for music. Facebook has allowed artists’ fan pages to include music for a while now, but the widgets don’t fully compare with MySpace’s capabilities.

Well, it’s no surprise that Zuckerberg is trying to one-up the competition.

The word around town is that Facebook might pair with a number of music services, such as Spotify, Pandora, Mog, Rhapsody and others. Users will be able to click on a “Music” tab, which will list songs you recently listened to and shared as well as those recommended by friends. Facebook Music will be your very own virtual jukebox.

So, is this a good idea? I say, “Why not?” We live in a world where everything is in constant flux. Traditional forms of anything (print, radio, etc.) are becoming obsolete. I still enjoy an old record player and the feel of vinyl, but that doesn’t mean I don't own an iPod. Go for it, Zuckerberg. Just don’t sell any more of my information to companies. Let me listen to music in private.
