The Campus Kitchen at the University of Massachusetts Boston (CKUMB) is one of 33 locations nationwide of The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP). CKP is a national leader in community service for students and is the future of hunger relief. CKP is empowering the next generation of leaders to implement innovative models for combating hunger, developing food systems, and helping communities help themselves.
CKUMB is launching a new outreach initiative which aims to improve families’ food security by providing the tools and knowledge necessary to apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps). Nearly 9 million seniors and over 16 million children in the U.S. are struggling with hunger. Yet, due to myths, stigmas, and barriers surrounding SNAP, 3 in 10 eligible people are not receiving the benefits that could help them get enough to eat each month. Among seniors, nearly 2 out of 3 eligible older adults are not receiving SNAP. By helping people understand the purpose, process, and benefits of SNAP, we can make a difference in the long-term food security and stability of local families.
Our target populations will include low-income senior citizens and parents of children who participate in CKUMB meal or education services. Outreach sessions will involve giving short presentations, conducting Q&A, and performing eligibility screenings using an online system. Training will be provided.
