Pennsylvania -
Who We Are:

United By Blue is a Philly-based startup apparel brand with a social mission. We sell a line of organic cotton t-shirts, rugged waxed canvas bags, and handmade artisan jewelry. What sets us apart from other brands is our social mission: for every product we sell, we remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways around the world through company organized and hosted cleanups. Our internship program is designed to give students real and meaningful experience at a social business.

You’ll work with our Director of Marketing, Alli Blum, and our Cleanups Associate, Leslie Weinberg to plan and execute press strategies for cleanups and to promote products. Alli is a trained writing tutor, so when you work with her you will be mentored on how to write effective copy for everything from email pitches to product descriptions to microcopy. She also makes a point of connecting with everyone she meets, so you will be able to learn from her about how to grow your own personal network.

How to Apply:

1. Don’t send us your resume. Yes, this may be the first job since your summer ice cream gig that didn’t require a resume. But we’re serious. Resist the urge to sneak it in.
2. Answer a few questions for us. Instead of giving us the information on your resume, just answer a few questions to give us the information we need form it.
3. Send us a letter to explain why you want to work at UBB. Some may call it a cover letter, others may call it a letter of interest. We prefer to think of it as an opportunity for you to show off and tell us why we should hire you. Here are some questions to that will help you write a letter to grab our attention:
a. What excites you about UBB? You’re talented and smart and could no doubt spend your semester at any company in New York or Philadelphia. What about our company or mission excites you? What do you want to learn here? How does UBB fit into your career goals and aspirations?
b. Why should we bring you onto our team? What relevant experiences have you had that will help you succeed in this internship? What have you done and what will you do here that will make you the best intern we could hope for? Tell us about your skills and how they are relevant to the opportunity to which you are applying.
c. When would you like to join us? Are you applying to the spring, summer, or fall semester program? To which position are you applying?
5. Send us samples of your work. If you’re applying for graphic design or film and photography, send us your portfolio and a link to your web site if you have one (there’s a spot for it in the application portal). If you are applying to any other position, send us a writing sample and a link to your blog if you have one.
6. Follow up with Alli by emailing her at alli@unitedbyblue.com or calling her at 215-642-0694. This part is optional, but it helps us put faces (or at least voices) to the applications we receive.
