My First Sorority Experience

The rush process was exhausting. Waiting for bid day was even worse and waiting to enjoy the social perks of being in Greek life was painful. At least, that’s how it was for me. I was sick with 103 fever, a sinus infection and an ear infection.

I missed many of the initial aspects of being a new member of my sorority that were meant to bond the new pledge class together because I was so sick, moving from my bed only to make myself more tea. However, I was really excited that I started to feel better around the time our socials were going to start. I was anxious to start going out again and especially to go out with my new sisters who were all already so close.

Luckily I had a friend who pledged the same sorority as I, so we headed out together to meet everyone at our sorority house. I walked up to my pledge class standing in the foyer apprehensively while my friend greeted everyone as if she had known them for ages.  I was nervous I would be the outsider, left out of inside jokes and stories of things that had gone on prior weeks, but as I smiled and said hello to everyone all the girls immediately made me feel right at home. Many asked how I was feeling or if I needed help catching up with classes and others filled me in on all the events that had occurred since bid day, bringing me up to speed and making me feel like I hadn’t missed a thing.

As we walked to our destination they taught me special songs and cute sayings the older girls had taught them and we sang and talked like we were old friends. The social was fun and the music was good but the highlight of my first sorority social was the warmth and welcome I felt from my sisters, which reassured me that I had made the right choice, found my home away from home and gained lifelong friends.
