If you’d asked me how I felt about “matching” ensembles back in February of 2011, I would have told you I was completely, one-hundred-percent against them. I love when outfits have lots of contrast, whether its contrasting colors, patterns or textures, and coordinating an outfit around one color or print just felt so dated. But now, in the truest example of the saying “Everything comes back in style,” we’re seeing a revival of the matchy-matchy mentality.
I noticed ultra chic bloggers like Blair Eadie and Liz Cherkasova participating in this “trend” for the past year, and I’ve steadily grown to love it; whether it’s a ladylike all-plaid outfit or varying shades of mint green, these stylish women know exactly how to make this idea feel fresh and youthful. I personally have been on the hunt for pale pink skinnies for the past few months, and can’t wait to try pairing them with other pink pieces to create a subtle ombré effect – but if matching an entire look isn’t your thing, there are more subtle approaches to try.
Matching your accessories is easy and on-trend, especially when it comes to your shoes and bags. It may feel extra retro to match your shoes to your purse (i.e. this is probably one of those “rules” your grandma used to tell you) but the distance between these items in your outfit creates a completely understated result. You can try this with your trusty neutral bags (like camel and black), or embrace spring’s bright hues by pairing bold items together:
