Exam time means library time. Trying to work at home is distracting: there is a fridge full (or empty) of food, a TV streaming all of your favorite shows and your roommates blasting Taylor Swift. With bright fluorescent lighting, spacious desks and utter silence, the library is the perfect place to get work done.

Some students visit the library on a daily basis, and some only go to research or for a quick study session. In order to accommodate these super-studiers, many libraries are open 24 hours, reach 5 floors, have a Starbucks and even provide shuttle services for when it gets late.

Although the hard, off-balanced library chairs are not as comfortable as your couch or bed, it is guaranteed that you will get more work done. “I try to go to the library as much as possible. I can’t ever get work done at home so the library is perfect for studying and working on papers,” said Sydni Naglie, a student at the University of Western Ontario.

When you visit the library, it is important to be prepared. You should always make sure to bring earplugs or headphones. Although library signs typically read: “NO TALKING,” there are always people whispering and random outbursts of laughter. With all the sound blocked out, your mind will be clear to focus on your task. You should also make sure to bring everything you need for the work you need to complete. It’s never fun when you’re on a role with your Roman Empire essay and your computer dies because you left your charger at home.

It is also a good idea to go with a friend or study buddy. They can always keep you company at the library. No, you are not in kindergarten, but it helps to have someone to encourage you to keep working or to watch your $2000 computer when you go for a break. You definitely don’t want your laptop stolen in the library.

Above all, the library is a great source for research. You probably have no idea how many books your school library holds—and probably wouldn’t believe the number if you heard it. And, you have the opportunity to ask the experts. Librarians are extremely knowledgeable and know where everything is located. The resources a library holds can help immensely with projects, and even as simple study tools.

So, choose a floor, room, table or seat and get started on your work. With most campus libraries located on or near campus, you might as well take advantage of the convenient facilities. Soon enough, the library will be your second home and you’ll need to start paying rent!
