Notable Album Release: Grovesnor (aka, that drummer from Hot Chip) – Soft Return

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Grovesnor, aka Rob Smoughton, aka Hot Chip’s drummer, will be releasing his debut album, Soft Return, on May 25 via Lo Recordings. Apparently he’s performed plenty solo electro pop in the past throughout the UK, but since I’m scared of other cultures this is the first I’m hearing of his solo efforts. Although, is it fair to even call them “efforts” when it sounds like he barely shed a bead of sweat making the music?

The first single, “Taxi From The Airport” (here’s where I’m gonna get all word crazy on you –>) *effortlessly* blends together its own take on modern electro/synth with piano pop from the golden olden days and gospel oooh ahhh harmonies from somewhere else entirely. It all sounds so smooth – it’s not necessarily the type of backbreaking dance song you’d get up and shake your hips off to, but its got all the elements for a skip down the street, if you know what I mean. Do you? Whatever, listen below.

Color of Clouds new

I’ve written about Color of Clouds aplenty on Knox Road and once here on CMag, so it’s with much excitement to provide you with this information. The Brooklyn trio who specialize in sweet, subdued electronic pop are set to digitally release their debut full-length, Satellite of Love, on April 6 along with a record release show at Pianos in NYC on April 8. Check out “Brother”, which was on their EP The Look, but has been remastered for Satellite of Love, below.

Being the human person I am (I know – shocker), when I hear about music combined with a worthy cause I’m always ready to pounce. This time I’m providing an ultra special and relevant treat though: the benefit concert is happening right at the University of Maryland’s Santa Fe Café! Get your tickets here.

Esteemed Philadelphia funk/rock/pop/jazz fusion rockers, Codename (which includes UMD’s own Jon Joffe on guitar), with special guests Telepath and Jimakata, will play Saturday, April 11. All proceeds will go to The Mockingbird Foundation.

For those who don’t know, The Mockingbird Foundation helps to fund and support music education for children. For more information you can check out their website. Please help make a difference.
