New Year’s Football

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

New Years is a time of rebirth for a lot of people.  Many use the beginning of the new year as a launching point to cut out bad habits, establish better ones and move on in a positive direction with their lives.  It is only fitting that the NFL Playoffs kicked off last weekend with a theme of rebirth.

In Seattle, receiver Mike Williams’ story this year has been an interesting one, to say the least.  The effort that this man has put forth to get back to playing great football is unbelievable.  If it weren’t for Michael Vick, Williams would be the Comeback Player of the Year.  So seeing Williams play well on Saturday shouldn’t have been a surprise.  However, watching teammate Marshawn Lynch play the best game of his career was special.  Lynch ran for 131 yards on 19 carries, one of which was a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that already has some ESPN-folk calling it the greatest postseason run of all time.  Just three months ago, Lynch was traded to Seattle as a Buffalo Bills castoff.

Indianapolis hosted quite a game of its own on Saturday.  There we witnessed the rebirth of formerly “washed up” New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson.  Tomlinson surprised many with his play this season, shaking off doubt that he still has the ability to be an effective runner in the NFL.  Against the Colts, Tomlinson ran for 82 yards on 16 carries, including two touchdowns down at the goal line.

In Kansas City, it was the rebirth of the aging Baltimore defense that surprised many, including myself.  I’ve never doubted their front seven, but even the secondary played good enough coverage to allow the pass rush to affect Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel severely.  The old, fearsome Ravens defense is gone, and Kansas City showed that you can run the ball effectively against these guys.  However, the veteran leadership of the Ravens proved too tough for the inexperienced Chiefs.

Finally, on Sunday I was pleasantly surprised to see the rebirth of the Green Bay Packers’ running game.  Absent for most of the season due to injury and a lack of depth, running back James Stark was able to bring it back by stepping up to shoulder the load for the Packers.  Starks ran for 123 yards on 23 carries, and really gave Green Bay great balance and the ability to keep the Eagles’ offense on the sidelines.  Starks only had 29 carries in his career prior to Sunday.

Is Michael Vick the midseason MVP?

Every once in a blue moon, an athlete somewhere will pull off a feat so impressive, so awe-inspiring that he or she forces us to question if what is transpiring is actually real.

Monday night, that athlete was Michael Vick.

Exploding for six touchdowns, Vick accounted for more than four hundred total yards and averaged a first down both with his arm and on his feet. Making it look eerily easy, Vick single-handedly picked apart division rival Washington and their newly promoted quarterback Donovan McNabb who, oh by the way, was serving as Vick’s mentor in Philadelphia just a season ago.

If you’ve ever played Madden on rookie, that’s close. But on Monday, Vick faced a bigger, sweeter cupcake on the road in Washington.

Just ten seconds into the second quarter, the Eagles had tallied up a 35-0 lead and there didn’t appear to be anything, anyone wearing red could do about it. The Eagles, once thought to be facing their biggest rebuilding year since McNabb joined the team a decade ago, won 59-28. Now they are as legitimate of a contender as anyone. Can’t say we didn’t tell you so.

Washington eventually got its offense back on track, but facing such a deficit against an Eagles team showing no signs of slowing down, there efforts were never short of forlorn.

Vick became the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 300 yards, rush for more than fifty and have four passing and two rushing touchdowns.

In light of all the hype, it’s easy to forget that Monday night was almost the historic performance that never was. The Eagles’ initial starter, Kevin Kolb, went down with a concussion in Week 1, setting the stage for Vick coast his way to being 2010’s midseason MVP.

But as Vick continues his inconceivable rise to greatness on the field, he is making an even more surprising ascension: back into the good graces of fans.

Vick made national headlines for his involvement in an illegal dog-fighting ring and spent more than a year in prison just three years ago, and there weren’t many fans left with a good thing to say about the most mobile quarterback ever.

Now, fans and members of the press alike are practically lining up to forgive the star, who hasn’t seemed to lose a step on the ground and, even more surprisingly, has the arm and mindset of a pocket passer. Before he took off against a defenseless Redskins defense, averaging ten yards at a time, Vick was checking his third and fourth options. Excuse us? Michael Vick has somehow miraculously transformed himself into a passing quarterback without losing any his speed? This all during the two years he was without a starting job in the NFL? We know, doesn’t make sense to us either.

We Want Favre….and Chicken Wings!!!

The preseason doesn’t start for more than a month, but there are already plenty of stories to follow before the season kicks off on September 10th.

Favre and Away

Of course, the biggest story is the possible return of Brett Favre. After retiring twice Favre is talking about making another return, this time with the Minnesota Vikings. Since the Vikings and Packers play in the same division, this would actually make people pay attention to the NFC North for the first time in a long time. Hopefully he avoids dragging out his decision. I doubt it though.

Forgetting Brandon Marshall

After trading away franchise QB Jay Cutler, the Denver Broncos appear to be ready to grant WR Brandon Marshall his recent request for a trade, as well. Great off season, huh? On the field, Marshall is one of the most talented receivers in the league. Off the field, he enjoys stabbing his girlfriend with forks and slipping on McDonald’s wrappers. If any team decides to trade for him, they will immediately improve their team. Unfortunately, they will also get a ton of headaches.

The Brady Bunch

Tom Brady is Back. You've Been Warned.

Last year Tom Brady threw for only 76 yards before a knee injury ended his season. Now he’s back and the Patriots appear ready for another Super Bowl run. Plus, he married a supermodel, which should only improve his quality of life.

Legal Trouble

Both Plaxico Burress and Michael Vick are awaiting Roger Goddell’s ruling on their availability for this upcoming season. Plaxico shot himself so I think he’s suffered enough. Imagine the shit he got from his friends? Both could make immediate impacts on NFL teams if given the opportunity. The commissioner will probably rule on both situations closer to the start of the season.

Rookie QB’s

After the success of Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, I expect the Lions and Jets to force their rookie signal callers into action ASAP. Matthew Stafford will probably have the chance to watch Daunte Culpepper for at least half the season before he is asked to quarterback the team. Jets rookie Mark Sanchez won’t be so lucky. Expect him to start from day one with some good games and some not.
