Sorry, There’s A Lot of Football In This One

Maria Schwartzman

I always have to feel bad for the underdog teams who play the big guns right at the beginning of a season. This happens in every sport, but it seems to me most noticeable in football and basketball, and since we’re in football season … This weekend it was #1 Florida pounding on poor Troy (56-6), #9 Brigham Young beating up Tulane (54-3), #13 Oklahoma ripping Idaho State (64-0), and I could keep going on but I’ll stop there; you get the point. I feel a little bit better when the underdog does get some points on the board, but man! be a little easy on the poor teams and don’t embarrass them too much. Back in my day we didn’t kick ‘em when they were down … both sides have feelings, and while the point of the game is to win, think about how you’d feel if you just got beat 70-3 (#23 Cincinnati vs Southeast Missouri State) and show a little compassion. At least bring out the freshmen.

Not to stay on the football track too much longer, but being partial to all Indiana sports teams I just have to point out that IU football won a (second) game (!) this season, two in a row (23-19 vs Western Michigan). This is very exciting since, well, Indiana football is quite clearly dominated by Purdue and Notre Dame, both of whom narrowly missed the big W this weekend. Purdue lost to Oregon 36-38 and #18 Notre Dame to Michigan, 34-38. I personally know many people saddened by the Purdue and ND results, but I didn’t see one Facebook status update congratulating IU on their win. Maybe the Hoosiers take for granted that although their soccer team is pretty sweet, their football team usually loses? In any case, IU currently has a winning record (I don’t care that it’s only week 3) and for that I am happy.

To talk about something that’s not football, I would like state that I have realized why I know nothing about water polo. One, it’s only a Div I and III sport. Mostly the only DI sports I pay attention to are football, basketball, and some soccer. DIII is another story. But why are there no DII schools? And two, it doesn’t exist in the Midwest, where I have lived all my life save two summers spent near Los Angeles, where I actually met a few people who played water polo. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t get them to explain the game to me at all, except I do know that guys like to punch other guys under the water where the ref can’t see. As far as I can tell, water polo exists mostly in California, along with the rest of the Pacific coast, and some schools from the East coast. Those driving times to matches must be pretty long.”
